What is Ghostwriting?A brief history

Ghostwriters help others get their words into print, which includes books, articles, speeches, you name it. In most cases, the ghostwriter does not originate the content they write. Rather, they act as scribes and gather information and take notes from what their client says, often in an interview.

Ghostwriting and ghostwriters have been helping others get their words into print for millennia. Whether they helped kings, prophets, or other political leaders, ghostwriters have been working behind the scenes to help record much of history. For instance, two sets of scribes helped author the Old Testament in the Bible. And its likely that those scribes obtained their primary information from a variety of sources. In other words, the prophet of a particular book in the Bible was probably not the final author of that book that bears their name.

Today, ghostwriters help everyone from movie and TV stars to presidents, and CEOs. But not only that, ghostwriters, can also help ordinary businesspeople and others to write their own books and articles. Ghostwriters aren't just for the rich and famous: anyone can benefit from their help.

Why hire a ghostwriter?

There are three main benefits to hiring a ghostwriter to help you succeed in writing your book:

First, hiring a ghostwriter helps ensure that your book actually gets written.

Second, hiring a ghostwriter saves you time.

And third, hiring a ghostwriter improves your book.

You can still write your book on your own, but so many tasks in life become easier and turn out better when we do them with someone else.

So, if you want to actually finish your book, you feel that your time is worth something, you want your book to be the best it can be, hiring a ghostwriter makes sense.

Think of hiring a ghostwriter as an investment

Hiring a ghostwriter is an investment: in you, your future, and in what you want to leave behind. Before you engage a ghostwriter, however, first ask yourself what your time is worth. Because if your time is precious, and you don’t have years to spend on writing a book, then investing in hiring a ghostwriters is just that, a justifiable investment.

If you were thinking that hiring a ghostwriter would run $1 million, you’d be way off.

Instead, investing in working with a premium, high quality ghostwriter like me or one of my associates should run somewhere between $30,000 and $70,000, depending on your book’s length and complexity.

Examples of famous ghostwritten books

Many fiction, and even more nonfiction, books were written with a ghostwriter’s help. Here’s a quick list of some nonfiction books that benefitted from a ghostwriter:

  • Spare, by Prince Harry (ghostwritten by JR Moehringer)

  • Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, by Sheryl Sandberg with Nell Scovell

  • Scratching the Horizon: A Surfing Life, by Izzy Paskowitz with Daniel Paisner

  • I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, by Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb

  • American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History, by Chris Kyle, with Jim DeFelice and Scott McEwen

  • Becoming, by Michelle Obama

  • Heaven is for Real: A Little Boys Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back, by Todd Burpo

  • Profiles in Courage, by John F. Kennedy

  • It Takes a Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us, by Hillary Rodham Clinton

  • Decision Points, by George W. Bush

  • The Autobiography of Malcolm X, by Malcolm X

  • My American Journey, by Colin Powell

  • My Life, by Bill Clinton

  • Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance, by Barack Obama

Within fiction, James Patterson regularly uses a team of writers to write his books (whose production he no doubt oversees), and both Robert Ludlum and Tom Clancy produced books after they had already passed on, meaning that someone else was writing under their name. Many other examples exist as well.
